Fujiclean Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Nagoya, Japan; President: Masashi Goto) has commenced a demonstration project to verify the effectiveness of Johkasou (on-site wastewater treatment systems) in cold-climate environments.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the University of Calgary's research institute ACWA, LM Wastewater Solutions, and the Japan Sewage Works Agency.
The demonstration utilizes treated effluent from the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in the City of Calgary and is scheduled to run through March 2026. On August 13, 2025 (local time), a completion ceremony for the demonstration facility was held at the Pine Creek plant, attended by representatives from the University of Calgary, the Government of Alberta, the City of Calgary, and other Canadian stakeholders.
In response to changing demographics and infrastructure demands in rural areas, the need for effective wastewater treatment solutions continues to grow. In particular, many cold-climate regions face significant challenges in expanding centralized sewer systems. As a result, alternative solutions that can balance the protection of local living environments with water quality preservation are increasingly sought.
Through this demonstration, Fujiclean aims to clarify both the treatment performance and operational considerations of septic systems under cold-climate conditions. The results are expected to support the wider adoption of flexible and cost-effective decentralized wastewater treatment solutions in rural and cold-region communities.
